This is something I've been bitter about for a year now. There will be no photos in this post. This is more of a rant.
I love Jonathan Groff, as you can see from this post. He is an amazing actor and performer and he is one of my favorite people in the world, but I do not think that he deserved a Tony nomination for his portrayal of King George III in Hamilton last year. He only had three songs, and honestly, the character is just for comic relief. He's not very vital to the story.
I honestly think that Okieriete Onaodowan or Anthony Ramos deserved that nomination more. Oak, who played Mulligan and Madison and Anthony who played Laurens and Philip showed that they can play two completely different characters in the same show. They did so well.
I had a rational fear that Jonathan would win just for being the only white member of the Hamilton cast, because if you know anything about award shows, a lot of them are white washed. I am so glad that Daveed Diggs took home that Tony. He did absolutely amazing as Lafayette and Jefferson.
And I know people are going to say "well the 2016 Tonys weren't whitewashed" well no, but that is mostly because Hamilton was completely sold out and it 100% deserved the Tonys it earned. I mean, from what I understand, Hamilton is the most Tony nominated show of all time. It's an amazing show. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a genius and one of my heroes. As a smol Puerto Rican child, I never really had many PR role models, until I discovered Lin-Manuel in 2009ish.
But I am so bitter about Jonathan getting that nomination. He is amazing but he did not deserve that. Just like Mike Faist did not deserve his nomination this year. I honestly think that nomination should have gone to Will Roland, but I'll save that rant for another post.
This is really short, because I just needed to get it all out because I will forever be upset over this. And I wanted to do a quick post because I really am trying to post as often as I can.
Tell me your thoughts, do you think Jonathan deserved the nomination over Oak and Anthony?
